A Perfect Circle
Earlier this school year, I wrote a column feeling a bit overwhelmed and expressed I felt the anxiety of another school year build among all the “tasks” set before me in order to reach graduation. I was nervous and questioned whether or not I would live up certain expectations as a student, friend, teammate, daughter—you name it. And in the end of it all, I am proudly happy to announce that I have failed to meet them all (kind of). But seriously, I am proud I didn’t meet everyone’s expectations as I have realized that’s okay! As a senior, it’s not about pleasing everyone or trying live by someone else’s rules. I am graduating. I am job hunting. Shit got done.
I am not sure what is about senior year—but it has been a constant bittersweet cycle. It’s living in a cliché—(Juniors, just you wait). Most of the time you are focused on the present—being the typical student you are—in flip flops and jeans trying to find out where everyone is going out for the night. Other times, there is a weight hung upon your shoulders feeling the time here chugging to a slow, inevitable halt all the while frantically focused on this big blank canvas ahead of us.
But like most seniors, I am sick of CareerBuilder, Monster, and Yahoo! HotJobs. I am tired of sending my résumé out into the abyss. But alas! I, like everyone else will prevail. I have seen good things happen to very deserving and I know my time will come. Even just today, two of my close friends had whole new doors opened to them for their futures. One was recently accepted to another pharmacy school, while another was offered a teaching job at a high school. They both offer everyone hope for careers and building your own path.
So yes, I am still going to send out my résumé and keep my fingers crossed – but I’m not going to worry about what company calls me or who doesn’t call me back because soon enough someone will believe in me.
Most important, after all of this, employed or not, I am going to enjoy my summer. I plan heading to Wrigley Field, grabbing a beer and enjoying the game because it’s a job well done. I am going to train for the Chicago Half Marathon because I really don’t want to stop running! I still plan on spending a good wad of cash on new clothes because well, I love to shop. Heck, I might just get that new car or pursue graduate school in the fall. It’s going to be a good ole’ fashion Chicago summer and I am really liking the idea of not having everything figured out. Decisions will be made when the time is right.
Most people who know me, know I am a die-hard Cubs fan. In truth, I believe it can teach a lot of life lessons and I find real beauty in the game. And its weird because I’ve realized just because school is ending doesn’t mean our lives are going to fall apart. Like famous phrase of Cub fans every where, there truly is “always next year” and I am looking forward to it and wishing the best years to come for our lives. |
